ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on the evaluation of the factor affecting growth of indigenous building construction firm in Nigeria (Owerri Imo State as a case study).  Specifically, the study aims to assess whether management skills influence growth of indigenous construction firms in Nigeria, examine whether environmental factors moderate growth of indigenous construction firmsin Nigeria, find out whether irregular economic decisions  affect the growth of indigenous building construction firm in Nigeria and analyze whether fraudulent practices of some construction companies affect the growth of indigenous building construction firm in Nigeria. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 141 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that  management skills influence growth of indigenous construction firms in Nigeria. The study also revealed that environmental factors moderate growth of indigenous construction firms in Nigeria. The study further revealed that irregular economic decisions be government affect the growth of indigenous building construction firm in Nigeria. Finally, the study revealed that fraudulent practices of some construction companies affect the growth of indigenous building construction firm in Nigeria. The study thereby recommend that better management and project planning would go a long way in improving performance and growth of  construction firms. The use of ICT would help improve performance and growth by making work flow easier; Access to bank loans would help improve performance; Incentives for site operatives would improve performance of work by motivating employees performance to the best of their ability; Sufficient government patronage would improve performance; More machinery on site would improve performance.
